The Research Center of American College, in collaboration with the International Sociological Association and the University of the Aegean, organized the international conference titled “Zenon of Kition: The Legacy of Stoicism in Turbulent Times – Addressing Issues of Sustainability, Globalization, Inclusion, and Democracy” on November 10, 2023, in Larnaca.
The conference examined how Stoic philosophy remains relevant in today’s world, offering valuable insights into navigating contemporary challenges. Discussions focused on globalization, democracy, sustainability, and social inclusion, addressing their impact on modern society. Researchers and academics analyzed how the Stoic principles of rationality, resilience, and self-discipline can provide solutions to political, social, and environmental uncertainties.
A key objective of the conference was to strengthen academic collaboration and promote research initiatives between institutions. Additionally, it aimed to enhance cooperation between local governance and academic institutions to preserve and highlight Larnaca’s rich cultural heritage, as it is the birthplace of Zenon of Kition, the founder of Stoicism.
The event was under the patronage of the Mayor of Larnaca, Mr. Andreas Vyras, demonstrating strong local support. Scholars and professionals from various disciplines participated, sharing insights into philosophy, ethics, and social responsibility.
